Successful Prosecution Brought by Rásaíocht Con Éireann under Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011

Rásaíocht Con Éireann (Greyhound Racing Ireland) formally Bord Na gCon (Irish Greyhound Board) wish to advise that, at Nenagh District Court on Thursday 25th June, it was successful in its first prosecution brought against an individual under its most recently introduced legislation, the Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011.

Mr. Paul Nolan, Clonbrennan, Ballybrack, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary was fined €2500 by Judge Elizabeth McGrath for failing to comply with a Welfare Notice issued by Rásaíocht Con Éireann in November 2014. Measures outlined in the Welfare Notice were (a) the provision of sufficient quantities of appropriate food and water to be given to all greyhounds on a daily basis and (b) no greyhounds were to be kept on the premises from 5th December, 2014.

Mr. Nolan was also ordered to pay €1500 costs. This prosecution is a reminder to all breeders, owners and trainers that they must be fully compliant with the Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011

Welfare Manager for Rásaíocht Con Éireann Barry Coleman said "Rásaíocht Con Éireann condemns all acts of neglect towards greyhounds and encourages at all times responsible ownership practices. This prosecution under the Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011, which Rásaíocht Con Éireann helped develop, sets a strong precedent for the future and should further reinforce our tough stance against any potential future transgressors."
