The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT) was first established in 1997 by the Irish Greyhound Board, now Greyhound Racing Ireland. Funded through owners prizemoney deductions, matched donations by GRI & private donations, the charity works to rehome greyhounds after retirement and promote them as domestic pets. 

There are many dedicated staff, volunteers and greyhound owners behind the scenes of the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust, many of whom have never had their story recognised.

Throughout the summer and autumn of 2018, GRI took a photographer and videographer on the road to capture just some of the stories of our people. You can watch their stories on the videos below. The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust

The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT) was first established in 1997 by Greyhound Racing Ireland. 

It is jointly funded jointly funded together with greyhound owners to rehome greyhounds after retirement and in promoting greyhounds as domestic pets. Many retired greyhounds are also rehomed throughout Ireland, Europe and North America through charities supported by the IRGT.

The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust now assists Irish Private Rehoming Agencies in Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Kerry and Belfast by providing financial assistance towards either their veterinary costs or their transportation costs.

€2.76 million has been raised to support re-homing of greyhounds throughout the past decade.

The main source of funding for the Trust comes from racing owners through a 2% deduction of all winning prize money which is then matched by Greyhound Racing Ireland.  

Over 5,300 greyhounds were rehomed through the IRGT and supported rehoming charities between 2008 and September 2018, including 768 between January and September so far this year.

Today, close to 1000 ex-racing greyhounds are rehomed annually through the IRGT and supported rehoming charities which receive IRGT financial assistance.

Many ex-racers now enjoy their retirement in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Slovenia, France and Sweden, given how rare greyhounds are across central Europe. Others also enjoy happy and healthy retirements right here in Ireland!
