Syrax was named after a fictional dragon from a prominent TV show and it would be quite fitting to suggest she burnt off her rivals in the final of the Bosco Gleeson Memorial at Newbridge on Friday night, making the most of her inside draw to turn in front.
Favourite for honours was A Lucky Star but a missed start and early squeezing cost him his chance. Instead, it was the second favourite and kennel companion to the market leader Belfast Marty that looked the main threat as they entered the back straight.
Syrax, owned by Paul and Chloe Cronin, paid no attention to what was going on behind. Shooting into the turn, the daughter of Dorotas Wildcat and Correctandwrong was a deserving leader and had no intention of letting her advantage slip without a battle.
Belfast Marty flew into the third turn to challenge but Syrax closed the door before kicking on again. That effectively ended the chances of Belfast Marty. He would fade home, allowing Pearl Supreme to run on well to take second. Syrax was clear, however, and showing no signs of fatigue. She would emerge a comfortable three and a half length winner of the €3,000 final in a rapid 28.74.
BONO ON TUNE
Earlier on the card, Enda Losty’s Morning Bono (Broadstrand Bono/ Aine Dubh) set the standard in the semi-finals of the October Unraced ON2.
Leading from the second turn to beat her main market rival Pennys Show by three lengths in 28.88. LIghtfoot Anvika was best of the remainder, some ten lengths adrift in third.
MADGE MASTERS UTURE
The second heat saw Gilbert Anderson’s Singalong Madge emerge on top.
The daughter of Ballymac Bolger and Lovee Dovee was headed for much of the way by Shared Future but, for the second week running, she ran down that rival to score. The Keith Powell trained youngster got up to win by two lengths from Shared Future in 29.29.
