There have been reports of cases of leptospirosis in dogs in parts of the country.
Leptospirosis is a disease that is best known for causing jaundice in dogs. It is fatal in most cases unless treated very early after onset. Of greater concern, is the danger that leptospirosis poses for people who come into contact with a dog suffering from the disease. It is highly contagious to both humans and other dogs.
It is most important that all dogs are given a full primary course of vaccination against this disease and regular booster vaccinations. Please contact your veterinary surgeon for advice. Particular care should be taken with dogs that you may have purchased. These may not have been properly vaccinated and should be considered at risk. At a minimum, these should be given a booster vaccination on arrival at your premises.
