As always, the phone buzzed not long after 6.30pm on Thursday evening with the trial sheet emailed on from Shelbourne Park.
There was the usual a mixture of qualifying trials and a couple of noteworthy efforts.
The talented Massachusetts posted a quick 18.53 for the sprint. Not a surprise given his ability but there was also a 28.58 return for the 525yd trip. Undisputed was the winner of the two dog trial.
A little bit of further investigation uncovered that Undisputed, a January ’21 whelp, is amongst the very first litters by Pestana. But her ability doesn’t just come from her sire as she is out of the wonderfully talented Unlock Unlock.
Owned jointly by Wayne McCarthy and Paul Prendergast and handled by Nalin Monerawela, it was a stunning first mark. Nalin reports that she came to him in late January and has always shown real promise. That said, they were a bit taken aback by the run as she is very inexperienced.
There are no certainties when it comes to breeding but, given their pedigree, many would have expected a couple of potential stars to emerge from the litter. As we reported some fifteen months ago, the litter of seven was made up entirely of members of the fairer sex.
If the rest show the same sort of promise in their early trials, I’m sure Brendan Matthews and all at Townview Kennels, who bred the litter, will be more than happy. As for Pestana, he has been hugely busy over the past year and a half and there are many breeders throughout the land that will be happy to see that he has a few fast ones on the ground already.
