PAT MCCARTHY

PAT MCCARTHY

Greyhound lost a great friend in recent days with the passing of Pat McCarthy.

A well-known figure throughout the country, he was a bookmaker of some repute but also was heavily involved in the sport as an owner and breeder.

His career as a bookmaker began in the late 60’s, originally making a book at both Shelbourne Park and Harold’s Cross although he would later stand at Limerick, Newbridge, Longford, Mullingar and Galway before finally stepping down in 2011.

He was also a long-time owner and breeder following in his late father’s footsteps. He also bought and sold dogs across to the UK with his association with Tony Taylor leading to the latter being the leading trainer at Catford as a result.

A true character and gentleman, he was a hugely popular figure and had dogs with some of the best- known names in the sport including hall of fame handlers Jerry Melia and Francie Murray as well as

Charlie Fitzsimons, Mick Losty, Jimmy Deegan but mainly with his great friend Jimmy Murphy.

While known for laying dogs on his pitch he was also never afraid to back on of his own when he felt the time was right and landed many an ‘old-school touch’. Through his great involvement in greyhound racing and coursing, he made many, many friends over the years and will be greatly missed.

We would likely to send on our sincerest condolences to his children Linda, Denise, Aisling and Aaron, his beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

May He Rest In Peace.
