While there is plenty of quality action on offer at Enniscorthy these days, there is also great work going on behind the scenes to bring crowds in.
That was very evident on Monday night with the nine-race card acting as a fundraiser for the Irish Hospice Foundation in memory of Thrush and Jim Murphy.
It was a typically sunny evening in the south east but there was a real buzz around the place with a large crowd pouring through the stiles. The feature race was the final of the Kiltrea Kennels Open Unraced but many were there to support the foundation and enjoy a great night.
That will be the case for many more meetings through the remainder of the month. Bridget Whelan tells me they are out the door at present with benefit nights and it’s wonderful to see.
MORE BENEFITS COMING
On Thursday, there is another benefit, this time in aid of Cairde Conor.
This will give the Wexford racing community to get behind a worthwhile cause. Conor Martin is a young man who suffered a spinal cord injury in a horse-riding accident earlier this year and all funds raised on the night will go towards his fundraising appeal.
It doesn’t stop there. Enniscorthy will also hold a fundraiser next Monday, August 19th, for Enniscorthy Rugby Club, while North End United Soccer Club will hold a fundraiser on Thursday, August 22nd.
EUGENE REMEMBERED
To finish off the month, there will be a night to remember one of the great friends of greyhound racing in the south east, Eugene Gleeson.
Eugene passed away last September and just a few days shy of his one-year anniversary, on Thursday, August 29th, his friends will gather at Enniscorthy to remember a great friend. It’s certainly a date to put in your calendar.
