Georgy Roche has never been afraid to come to Dublin if he felt he had the firepower and that was certainly the case over the past two weekends.
On Saturday night, the much-respected Enniscorthy man captured the valuable This Runs Deep Open 525 with the hugely promising Rambling Boy and he is now dreaming of big things with his son of Jacob Tashadelek.
And why wouldn’t he? In what was his first outing at Shelbourne Park, Rambling Boy displayed brilliant early speed and pace between the second and third turns to leave his rivals standing in the semis of the valuable competition. He posted a rapid 15.86 to the third turn before winning in 28.13.
Predictably, he was installed the warm favourite for Saturday’s decider and produced another faultless display. Again, very professional at boxes, he flew into the turn to clear the fast-starter Sober Secret. For the second week running he broke the 15.90 barrier to the third turn before winning in 28.17.
It’s no surprise George has found himself fielding a number of phone calls but he has resisted temptation to sell to this point, although one suspects he was very close.
Said Geroge of his newest star, “He’s a real dog. I knew that early in his career. He won a little unraced stake for me in Clonmel and I decided to give him a rest to let him mature. He was big and raw and I think it was the right thing to do.
“He hasn’t put a foot wrong since I brought him back. He’s so consistent at the start and I think he’ll really love the longer run to the turn over 550. At this stage I’d be looking at the Derby with him. He’s a really talented greyhound.”
Indeed, Rambling Boy has made a real impression to this point in his career with his record reading seven wins from nine starts. Given his professionalism and early speed, it’s safe to say he will be winning many more races in the months ahead. It’s wonderful to see the popular Georgy Roche with a good one to go to war with and we wish him the best in the future.
