It’s with sorrow we must report the passing of one of the great greyhound racing enthusiasts, Kevin Commins, in recent days.
The Ardee man would be well known to most following a long involvement in the sport. During his time, Kevin owned and trained some top-class performers but he was particularly good with stayers and had real success with the likes of Ferdia Bound, Debidee Lane and Debidee Coco. The first named broke multiple track records over distances ranging from 700 to 1025yards. He was a brilliant winner of the Ted Hegarty Marathon at Harold’s Cross and will long be remembered as one of the great ultra marathon performers.
The same can be said for Debidee Lane. She too won the two-lap Hegarty Marathon at Harold’s Cross, breaking the track record in the prelims.
Kevin was a true student of the sport, in particular breeding lines. He could go back many generations of a dogs pedigree without consulting the stud book and was clearly a real enthusiast. He was also great company, a tremendous character and a real gentleman.
These traits served him well in his professional life also with Kevin a hugely successful butcher. He was also an avid golfer and leaves behind a great many friends.
We would like to take this opportunity to send on our condolences to his wife Vera, his sons Martin and Kevin, his brothers Tommy, John, Jim, Patsy and Paul, his beloved grandchildren Matthew, Cian, Katie, Jonathan and Courtney, his extended family and many friends.
May He Rest In Peace.
