PAT DORAN

PAT DORAN

We lost another great greyhound man in recent days with the sad news that Pat Doran had passed away.

Pat was involved in the sport for a great number of years, over forty five years to be exact. A true gentleman, he was best known by those that frequented Newbridge and Mullingar but, in more recent years, also had more reason to journey to Shelbourne Park.

This was mainly through the exploits of his greatest ever performer, Brownstown Tango. She was a brilliant bitch with incredible trapping ability and stunning early speed. She was a revelation for Pat and owner and Pat’s great friend Jerry Connors.

She began her career at Newbridge and the Open Bitch Unraced which is now a permanent part of the calendar is named after her. Pat expressed his admiration or her when interviewed as part of the Twelve Days of Christmas in 2018 (Link below). That same interview can also be heard on soundcloud (link below).

A couple of lines stand out. Said Pat about his dream, “You’re hoping to win that Derby sometime, you know nothing else only dogs,”, He went on to speak passionately about how much the sport is part of his life, “We eat, drink and sleep dogs, that’s the way it is in this house.”

It’s a view that is shared by many in the sport but sums up Pat. With his passing, we have lost another great man that took nothing for granted. He was great company, a tremendous conversationalist and will be missed dearly by those that knew him, especially his many friends at Newbridge.

We would likely to take this opportunity to send on our sincerest condolences his son Patrick, sister Gabrielle, brothers Matthew and Niall, sisters-in-law Edel and Margaret, brother-in-law Peter, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

May He Rest In Peace.
