Ian Fortune
Florence Cake completed her impressive march through the Toolmaker & DTSC Gold Cup at Drumbo Park on Saturday night, showing great speed and strength to control the contest from the early stages.
Patsy McCusker’s daughter of Droopys Sydney and Sizzling Daisy was sent to traps the 6-4 favourite and from the opening stride it was clear she meant business. Breaking smartly from trap two, she raced upsides Stefans Socks into the turn before asserting on the bend.
Once doing so, it was all one-way traffic. Increasing her advantage to halfway, she was never under any real pressure. Abigails Alex did fly down the back straight to move into second but Florence Cake seemed to sense her rival and she kicked again.
Staying on strongly, Florence Cake emerged a most impressive four and a half length winner in a rapid 28.28. Abigails Alex was a good second with Stefans Socks in third a further length and a half adrift.
DE LUXE A POTENTIAL STAR
Earlier on the card, there was a notable run from Droopys De Luxe.
In what was just her second career start, the daughter of Out Of Range and Bower Laura displayed immediate acceleration over the two bend trip to lead from the opening yards.
Ray Hamilton’s exciting June ’21 whelp then pulled further and further clear, powering up the home straight to score by an ever-widening six and a half lengths in 17.76. She is most certainly one to put in the notebook.
