Storys Mattie and Florence Cake prevailed in the semi finals of the Toolmaker & DTSC Gold Cup at Drumbo Park on Saturday night. Neither were favourite for their respective heats but they avoided the traffic spots.
IN the case of Florence Cake, she did so by flashing from traps to lead all. Patsy McCusker’s daughter of Droopys Sydney and Sizzling Daisy had shown massive promise in the early part of her career and, after a layoff, she seems to be recapturing that type of form.
Once going to the front on Saturday, she eased right away before coasting home to a four length success over Sporty Bigman in 28.65. Defining Moment was two lengths away in third.
A MATT FINISH
Storys Mattie wasn’t the fastest into stride in the opening heat but ran a wonderful bend, staying wide of the pack to strike the front early in the back straight.
Petersburg attempted to get after the leader but was stopped in his tracks around the last two bends. This left Keith McConville’s Storys Mattie (Laughil Blake/ Ranchers Rainbow) to race on to a deserving victory by three lengths from Abigails Alex in 28.74. Stefans Socks was the third qualifier, just a head behind the runner-up.
