AIDAN WALSH

AIDAN WALSH

It’s with great sadness we must report the passing of Aidan Walsh, one of the true gentlemen of greyhound racing.

Only last September Aidan was lucky enough to accomplish his dream in the sport by winning the Derby as a part owner of The Other Kobe.

He was on a real high after the success and savoured every moment after a lifetime spent in the sport. He had been introduced to greyhound racing by his late father and uncles and was lucky enough to own some exceptional dogs. These included 1984 Derby finalist and Dunmore 400yd record breaker Curryhills Fox, who was trained by his great friend and subsequent Hall of Fame recipient Francie Murray.

He also owned his litter brother Curryhills Brute who went on to become a leading sire in Australia, while in more recent years he went desperately close to claiming Derby glory in Scotland with Fair Taxes going down by just a short head in 2016.

Aidan also gave plenty back to the sport he loved. As a proud Kildare man, he sponsored one of the great competitions, the Texacloth Puppy Derby, at his local track Newbridge for over forty years.  Over the long history of the event, many superstars emerged, giving Aidan great joy. It was something he mentioned to Barry Drake on his Talking Dogs Podcast last September. (Click on this link to hear it).

Aside from being a great owner and sponsor, Aidan was also a true gentleman, wonderful company and the greyhound racing community is far worse for his passing. We would like to take this opportunity to pass on our sincerest condolences to his loving wife Caren, his sons David, Alan, Roy, Paul, daughter Annemarie, stepdaughters Katie and Harriet, his brother Ger, his beloved grandchildren, extended family and many, many friends. May He Rest In Peace.
