Yorkie Ollie Fancied For Irish Greyhound Derby Glory

Tuono Charlie Continues Winning Streak

The odds on Yorkie Ollie winning the 2024 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park have been considerably lowered in recent days from 33/1 into 14/1.

Trained by Owen McKenna, this exciting son of Magical Bale – Outdoor Roller was crowned the This Runs Deep ON1 525 champion on Saturday night after clocking a blistering time of 27.88 at the Dublin track, winning €10,000 in prize money.

He obliged as the 4/6 favourite with seven lengths separating him and Droopys Roar who was second for trainer Ian Reilly. It was a remarkable performance from Ollie who doesn’t turn two years of age until November. The future is bright for this star so it’s no surprise to see that the sponsors have trimmed his odds.

Another youngster that is fancied for Derby glory is Callaway Knegare, a kennelmate of Yorkie Ollie. A finalist in the 2024 Denis Linehan Solicitors Open Unraced Final at Curraheen Park earlier this month, Knegare caught the eye when trialling at Shelbourne Park recently.

This son of Droopys Sydney – Droopys Sweet recorded a rocket fast time of 27.79 with the track marked +.20 spots fast resulting is 27.99 going on his card. He is 16/1 from 20/1 to win the big one in November.

Track Record

The big performances kept on coming at Shelbourne Park as the John F McGee trained Da Bold Falcon set a new track record for the 600 yards. The old record was held by Laughil Duke since 2013 (31.91) but Da Bold Falcon smashed it when clocking 31.72 winning by seven lengths, unbelievable.

Kerry

There was huge excitement in the Kingdom as the 750 yards track record was broken not once but twice! First up was the Fraser Black trained Droopys Comrade who clocked 41.55 over the six-bend contest. There were big celebrations in Tralee, but they were short lived for connections as Tuono Charlie came out fifteen minutes later and set a new record of 40.76!

Trained by Sharon Hunt, this Corn Cuchulainn champion has now won his last eleven races in a row which is a huge achievement.

Droopys Comrade and Tuono Charlie continue their rivalry over the six-bends and Da Bold Falcon smashes a new track record at Shelbourne Park. It’s hard to keep up with all the action around the country but one name you have to add to your notebooks is Yorkie Ollie!”
