Shelbourne Park was due to host the final of the Bresbet Easter Cup on Saturday evening but Mother Nature had very different ideas.
Due to constant rain over a period of hours, the track management were left with no choice but to postpone.
Thankfully, they have rescheduled the classic decider, and the undercard, for next Saturday night. It means that the Shelbourne 600 will start the following week. Of course, there were punters on site on Saturday night with the restaurant opening to existing bookings and the intertrack service from Limerick provided the entertainment.
Amongst the guests were a number of representatives from the sponsors Bresbet but they weren’t too upset by the situation. Speaking to Carl Perry and Dave Kay, they completely understood the decision and agreed that the safety of the greyhounds must come first.
Said Dave Kay, BresBet operations director, “Shelbourne kept us up to date with the situation through the day and absolutely the right decision was made in the interests of the greyhounds’ welfare. The weather never relented!
“Most importantly the trainers were alerted which saved unnecessary travelling, but the track remained open to those who had booked - and the inter-track racing kept everyone busy and entertained.
“It’s unfortunate but we go again! The BresBet Easter Cup Final remains a superb race which we can look forward to. We’d like to thank Greyhound Racing Ireland for their support throughout the competition - and we have an extra week!
“This is a two-year deal of which we are immensely proud. GRI’s social media is second to none and we are excited about crowning the 2022 BresBet Easter Cup champion when we can!”
Bresbet have been wonderful sponsors and their understanding of the sport is highlighted by Dave’s words. We look forward to welcoming them back to Shelbourne Park next weekend for the rescheduled event.
