Glengar Blitz led the way at Enniscorthy on Monday night, setting the standard in the semi-finals of the Kiltrea Kennels open Unraced Stake.
Saunders Blue also impressed in the second semi-final but the headlines went to Glengar Blitz as she came home clear in 29.11.
BLITZ TOO SHARP FOR RIVALS
Trained by Pat Buckley for Bradley Canty, the well-bred daughter of Glengar Bale and Stream Of Sydney was paw-perfect as she justified long odds-on favouritism.
The 2-25 favourite broke smartly and worked hard to clear Faraway Downs.
Once doing so, it was all quite straightforward or Glengar Blitz. She eased on down the back straight before staying on well top secure a five and a half length victory over Faraway Downs. Ballybreen Holly stayed on well to finish just three parts of a length adrift in third.
BLUE SHOWS FINE PACE AND TRACK CRAFT
Glengar Star was a 1-2 favourite to provide Pat Buckley with a double but she had to settle for second spot behind Matt and Clare Owens’ Saunders Blue.
Ballybreen Zeta broke fastest to lead the field around the turn but Glengar Star and Saunders Blue were never too far away.
The favourite checked off the opening turn, allowing Saunders Blue to slip up her inner and this would prove decisive. Glengar Star did run a good second bend to go second once again but Saunders Blue had the inside line and he charged into the third turn to head his rival and get first crack at the leader.
Stepping to his right around the last two bends to challenge Ballybreen Zeta, he quickly asserted off the final turn before pulling clear to win by two and a half lengths in 29.25. Glengar Star came through for second, while Ballybreen Zeta tired on the run in to finish a further length and a half adrift in third.
