Barnfield James may have been overlooked by many in the run up to the final of the TIME Greyhound Nutrition Open Unraced Stake but he produced a superb front-running display to capture the feature at Enniscorthy on Monday night.
Sent to traps a 6-1 chance, Kevin McLean’s well-bred son of Glengar Bale and Coolavanny Lilly was electric at traps, shooting into a two length lead over Jacktavern Tiger into the corner. Kereight Pimple was hot favourite but he missed the start and took a bump on the turn.
De Ferryman turned third but it was clear before halfway that the winner was going to emerge from the front two. The Thomas Leahy trained Barnfield James continued to lead into the third turn but Jacktavern Tiger was on his heels.
While attempting to make his move on the inside at the third turn, Jacktavern Tiger had the door closed in his face. Barnfield James seemed to sense this and kicked clear. Finishing with real purpose, the September ’22 whelp powered on o emerge a thoroughly deserving five length scorer over Jacktavern Tiger in 28.93. There was a further four length gap to Kereight Pimple in third.
The manner in which the winner dispatched his rivals would suggest the penny has dropped and he is certainly a greyhound to keep on your radar in the coming weeks and months.
