Days after his superb winning debut at Shelbourne Park in the opening round of the Gizmo Cash @ Stud ON2 525, we reported that Jacktavern Chief would be withdrawn from the competition with a crack at the PGR Puppy Derby at Monmore in mind.
That seems likely to come to fruition with the David Byrne trained star amongst those in yesterday’s opening round draw for the Category 1 event. Byrne gave the son of Serene Ace two trials around Monmore, going considerably faster in his second look as he clocked a calculated 28.51.
The Irish challenger will take his place in the penultimate heat of Saturday’s opening round, racing from trap five and seems certain to improve further on his trial efforts. Given his exceptional early speed, he is entitled to plenty of respect but his lack of experience is a big concern. Of his rivals in the opening round, Northern Puppy Derby finalist Deliveroo looks the main threat.
