TED NARROWLY QUICKEST IN MARTIN FAHY MEMORIAL

Peter Farrell

The second round heats of the €3,000 to the winner Martin Fahy Memorial featured on last night’s Galway card and it was Glynnscross Ted that narrowly set the standard for owner Thomas Keane.

Narrowly downed in the opening round after making virtually every yard, Glynscross Ted wasn’t to suffer the same fate this time around as he ran to a very comfortable victory in heat three. Running from trap six, the 6/4 favourite got off to a bullet start out wide and he swept the opening turn to cut the nose from Peteles Phantom, who was the closest challenger, in two. Quickly opening an unassailable lead down the back straight as a result, the son of Droopys Sydney and Glynnscrosstyler went about his business in superb style thereafter as he accounted for a five and a half length victory over Peteles Phantom in second. The time was 29.18 .10s.

Just one spot slower on the clock was Kelpie as the 7/4 favourite made it back-to-back victories in heat two. Trained by Margaret Bolton for Scott Bennitt and Kenny McGrogan, the daughter of Broadstrand Bono and Solas An Iarthur was far from fluent at traprise, however, showed the superior early pace out wide to take a two length lead into the back straight. In doing so, Kelpie opened a sizable advantage at the midway point and despite Guideys Bullet bridging the gap in the closing yards, she still had two and a half lengths to spare crossing the line. The time was 29.19 .10s.

The opening heat of the night also saw the favourite prevail as Run For Mary (6/4) broke her maiden tag for owner and trainer Stephen Murray. It was Springwell Sugar that showed first from trap three, however, Run For Mary quickly excelled on the rails to nip up the inside and take a slender lead into the back from Springwell Thomo in second. The latter tried hard thereafter to reel in ‘Mary’, however, he came up short at the line as the daughter of Broadstrand Bono and Risky Reward kept enough in reserve to score by one and a half lengths. The time was 29.42 .10s.

The remaining heat was landed by Cragataska Black as she tore up the script to win at odds of 5/1. Owned by Kay Lynch, the daughter of Skywalker Logan and Drombeg Dancer was spring-like at traps as he red jacket held all the aces on the run to the opening turn. Holding a three length lead down the back straight, ‘Black’ pulled out all the stops as she comfortably held Crokers Captain thereafter to emerge a three length winner over her rival. The time was 29.31 .10s.
